I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t always the biggest fan of Shailene Woodley. I watched approximately five episodes of The Secret Life of the American Teenager before I erased the show’s existence out of my memory. So when I saw The Descendants and Shailene was, surprisingly, the standout actor of that film, I got really mad at her for wasting so much time on a terrible show. I know everyone has to start somewhere, but she was better than that train wreck. But after watching a bunch of interviews with her, she charmed me to death. So allow me to show you the light that is Shailene Woodley.
6. She’s the current queen of young-adult-books-turned-into-movies
She’s already done The Spectacular Now, she’s got the Divergent trilogy coming up and she is currently filming The Fault In Our Stars. So what I’m saying is that you might as well just love her because she’s going to be around for a while. It took me until after the Twilight series to love Kristen Stewart, and had I loved her throughout, life would have been so much easier.
5. She’s really talented
I only watched The Descendants because Jim Rash worked on the screenplay, I love Judy Greer and everyone kept talking about it. George Clooney has proved his acting abilities time and time again, so mark me down as pleasantly surprised when Shailene Woodley ended up being the best part of that film, at least for me. I guess an ABC Family show about teen pregnancy can only give you so much to work with.
4. She wakes up singing every morning
In this case, we should all be a little more like Shailene. I don’t know about you, but when I wake up it takes three alarms and a lot of coffee to get me out of bed and I still don’t wake up until after being in the world for three hours. She makes herself wake up in a good mood and ready to start the day!
3. She is weird, but she knows it and loves it about herself
There’s a very nice trend in Hollywood right now. A lot of the young stars are embracing who they really are instead of being fake for the cameras and then just being weird at home. Shailene forages the woods for medicinal supplies and food and in modern day America, that’s weird. And when she talks about her herbalistic way of life, she comes off as super charming and not Goop-y at all, like some would expect.
2. She’s charitable
Celebrities cut their hair for movie roles all the time, so no big deal when Shailene did it. But, unlike other celebrities, she donated her hair to the charity, Children with Hair Loss.
1. She never wants her fans to see her as something she is not
She doesn’t like to wear makeup. She hates when magazines photoshop her. She wore those five-toed barefoot running shoes to a Golden Globes after party. Why? She just wants to be herself. A totally not annoying reason that I wish more celebrities would embrace.
